THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE PIER STRENGTHENED WITH LATERAL PRE-STRESSED FRP SHEETS

  • The pre-tensioning methods of FRP sheets applied to strengthen concrete piers are researched and analyzed.Furthermore.A is presented a unique pre-tensioning technique of FRP sheets is presented to strengthen existing concrete piers.Taking a large-sized concrete pier in a railway bridge for example,the advantages of concrete piers strengthened with pre-stressed FRP sheets are compared with no pre-tensioned FRP sheets.Based on Chinese and American codes,the calculation methods of loading capacity and ductility of concrete piers strengthened with pre-stressed FRP sheets are presented.The calculation results show that the loading capacity and ductility of concrete piers can be improved with pre-stressed FRP sheets.Compared with AFRP sheets,CFRP sheet is more suitable as pre-stressed materials to strengthen concrete structures.
