The main teaching building of a middle school in Shanghai is the masonry structure,founded in 1985,following the expansion of the laboratory building and the corridor in 1991.The original design of earthquake-proofing of the original design was classified as Class C,with an earthquake fortification intensity of 6 degree.A comprehensive structural seismic evaluation of teaching building was done based on current norms.The evaluation results showed that the number of constructional columns was inadequate,mortar strength was much lower than the normal value,most of the vertical walls' antiseism and compressive bearing capacity were insufficient,thus,the overall seismic performance could not meet the requirements of current seismic code regulations.In accordance with the results of the evaluation,the strengthening method was put forward to achieve fortification class seismic standards and follow-up using period of 40 years for the teaching building.
