In this paper, earth pressure on the retaining structure due to surcharge near the excavation was analyzed, and the proposals from different technical codes were compared.The location of the maximum additional pressure was determined according to the theoretical elastic solution.The influence of soil friction angle and cohesion c on elastic-plastic solution of the additional earth pressure was investigated by using finite element method, and it was found that the additional earth pressure and the static pressure were directly proportional.For layered soil, the additional earth pressure was compared with that for homogeneous soil and their difference was shown.When the surcharge was caused by buried foundation nearby, the influence of the embedment depth of the foundation on the additional earth pressure was analyzed.
