Abstract
Based on a mid-side connection of a steel frame, this paper analyzed the deformation mechanism of the bolted-welded connection after loading and deduced a theoretical formula that could calculate initial stiffness. In order to verify the rationality of the formula, 15 finite element models were established to calculated the initial stiffness.The results show that the theoretical formula is fit to calculate initial stiffness. Besides, according to Eurocode 3, many connections can not meet the demands of rigid connections stiffness. They belong to semi-rigid connections.
