ULTIMATE CAPACITY OF AXIALLY-LOADED RECTANGULAR CFT STUB COLUMNS

  • A new method is proposed for calculating ultimate capacity of axially loaded rectangular CFT stub columns. Compared with the previous methods, the method considers the difference between concrete confinement effect provided by broad faces and that provided by narrow faces of the steel tube. The failure criterion for concrete based on true triaxial compression test is used to predict the ultimate strength of concrete core. Also, longitudinal steel strength of broad faces and that of narrow faces are respectively calculated due to considering the difference between longitudinal steel strength of broad faces and that of narrow faces. The new method is used to calculate ultimate capacity of 56 axially loaded rectangular CFT stub column specimens. The calculated results are compared with experimental results, which show a good agreement.
