DIRECT STRENGTH METHOD OF WELDED BOX-SECTION FOR PREDICTING ULTIMATE LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY

  • The accurate prediction of ultimate load-carrying capacity of welded box section subjected to local plate buckling has still not established in the current Chinese Code for Design of Steel Structure.This paper presents a direct strength method for predicting accurately ultimate load-carrying capacity of locally buckled box section under axial load,pure moment and their combination,respectively.A finite shell element is employed to exactly simulate the sectional geometric shape and boundary conditions,with incorporation of plate large displacement and elastic-plastic material.Based on numbers of numerical results,three simplified design formulas are respectively proposed to calculate the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the hollow section under the three load conditions mentioned above.The formulas are expressed directly with function of the component plate width-thickness ratio and section aspect ratio,and they are very convenient for designers,compared with the effective width method.
