Masonry U-shaped high abutment is a widely adopted structural form in western mountainous area.The partial cracks of regulation destroy often take place under the effect of earth fill and vehicle loading.In order to study the destruction mechanism of U-shaped high abutment and put forward improving methods to resolve the problem of partial cracks, the strength and destruction mechanism of the un-reinforced U-shaped abutment and reinforced U-shaped abutment are analyzed by model testing and finite element method simulation.As a result, the destruction mechanism of U-shaped high abutment is clear, and the validity of the improving method is also analyzed.
